Pumpkin Pie Protein Squares

Pumpkin Pie Protein Squares

About a year ago, around this time, we decided to have a pumpkin recipe challenge at work with our Black Iron Nutrition clients. I was excited and up for the challenge. I decided I wanted to make a high protein pumpkin bar. We got all kinds of healthy delicious ingredients, and then Krissy and I went to work in the kitchen trying to develop the perfect fall treat. A few hours later and multiple attempts to save whatever it was I was mixing together and throwing in the oven, I decided my creation was a failure and not worthy of sharing with the group.

Mint Chocolate Energy Bars

Mint Chocolate Energy Bars

I'm always on the lookout for a good energy bar. Something that has plenty of carbs for a pre or post workout snack and that also tastes good. I can't always stomach a whole meal right before or after I train, but I know I need the carbs to get me through my workout and to help with recovery. Date based bars are my fav and I love RX Bars and Larabars.

Citrus and Mint Vinaigrette with Omega 3

Citrus and Mint Vinaigrette with Omega 3

My friends at PurePharma have been coming out with some pretty awesome products lately, and when I heard that they were launching a liquid Omega 3 I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! I've talked a lot about fish oil in the past. It's one of the supplements I swear by and highly recommend. Most of the nutrients we need to thrive we get easily by consuming a healthy diet. However, heart healthy Omega-3 is often one we lack if we aren’t eating a lot of oily fish. Specifically things like salmon, sardines, anchovies, mackerel or trout. I love salmon and eat it quite often. And f you eat Omega-3 rich foods on a regular basis you may not need a supplement. However, if you don’t, or if you’re an athlete, you may need a little bit more. Omega-3 can help to prevent inflammation, enhance recovery and improve endurance performance. So basically I never miss a dose!

Healthy Shrimp Stir Fry

Healthy Shrimp Stir Fry

Shrimp is one of my favorite foods. It's easy and quick to cook, it's delicious, and its a great source of lean protein. Recently we had a Black Iron Nutrition challenge for our clients. Who could come up with the best stir fry recipe. And you know me, I'm always up for a challenge that involves food! Also, Trifecta, a company that I get a lot of my premade meals from, just added shrimp to their bulk food options. So when we decided on the stir fry challenge and my Trifecta delivery arrived at the door, I instantly knew what I was going to make.

Meal Planning Made Easy - Part 2

Meal Planning Made Easy - Part 2

A couple weeks ago I wrote a post about Meal Planning that gave an overview of different ways to go about your meal prep. Eating healthy involves planning and preparation. You have to put in the work every week just like you do with everything else in life. Your training, your job, your family, etc. By taking the time to develop heathy eating habits and a routine into your daily life, you set yourself up for success. And the more you do it, the easier it gets. This week I'm going to talk about simple ways to set yourself up for a week of success.

Meal Planning Made Easy - Part 1

Meal Planning Made Easy - Part 1

The easiest way to stay on track with your diet is to plan ahead and meal prep. It's simple. If you have good healthy food cooked and ready to eat, you're much more likely to stay on track. Has lunch time ever rolled around and you forgot to pack food, so you wind up at a restaurant trying to make a healthy choice, only to get more food than you need, or food that's cooked in too much oil, or loaded with dressing? Sure you can eat out and still eat healthy, but in the long run, packing your lunches and meal prepping your dinners is going to help you achieve your goals a hell of a lot faster (and save you money). Whether your goal is to lead a healthy lifestyle, lose weight (or gain weight), improve your athletic performance, prep for a compeition, or look good for a big event, this is the not so secret, secret!

Chicken Shawarma with Grilled Vegetables

Chicken Shawarma with Grilled Vegetables

Spring is officially here and that means its barbecue season! At least in my book. If I can cook it on the barbecue I'm probably going to. Because things just taste better on a grill don't they? I'm also so excited for everything I have coming this spring and summer. Last week my mom, dad and grandma all came over to help work in my yard. It needed a lot of work and every time I went out there I was so overwhelmed. In one day we did what would have taken me weeks. It was fun and the sun was out and now my yard looks great.

My Active Roots: Why the Name Change?

My Active Roots: Why the Name Change?

This has been a long time coming, and it was a tough decision to make. But a necessary one! So, why the new name? Well..things change and people evolve. I guess that's the short and sweet answer. 5 years ago I started this blog as a way to document and share my experiments in the kitchen while exploring the paleo diet. I didn't really know where it was going to go, I just knew I wanted to eat healthy whole foods and I wanted to find a way to make them taste good. Today I still enjoy sharing the same type of recipes, but I've incorporated a whole hell of a lot more into this blog.
