Chocolate Cherry Protein Shake + PR3 Giveaway

Chocolate Cherry Protein Shake + PR3 Giveaway

PurePharma just released a free ebook on Recovery Fundamentals and how to optimize your recovery to enhance your performance. I've talked briefly about recovery in different posts, but I've never dedicated an entire post to it. Which is crazy because it's one of the things I think about the most! If you come to my website it's likely to find healthy recipes which means you're concerned about what you put in your body. And that's awesome! You care about your health and how the food you eat nourishes your body and helps it recover.

Iced Almond Mint Mocha

Iced Almond Mint Mocha

Summer isn't over yet! And there's still plenty of sunshine to go around. So I'm planning to make the most of it these next few weeks. It's pretty hot here today actually, nearly 100F, and I just finished an awesome workout with my teammates. Now I'm taking a road trip down to Southern California to visit a couple of my girlfriends from college for a few days. I'm pretty sure we're just going to lay at the beach and eat lots of good food. That's what we do best. And it always makes me happy. Before I hit the road I whipped up this almond mint mocha to keep me awake for the 5 hour drive. Well hopefully it's only a 5 hour drive. It could potentially be 6 or 7 depending on how much traffic I hit in Los Angeles. But I've got a good book to listen to so I'll survive!

Sparkling White Berry Sangria

Sparkling White Berry Sangria

Although I'm in Utah for a month having a blast training and competing with my GRID team the San Francisco Fire, I'm missing out on one of my favorite events of the year back home, Passport Weekend. Passport Weekend is put on by the Delta Farm & Winery Trail which is a trail of farm stands and wineries through the California Delta. The trail winds along the rivers and sloughs of the delta along scenic highway 160, right where I grew up. Our region is known for its pears, cherries, wine grapes, corn, alfalfa, asparagus, and a variety of vegetables. I grew up helping my dad level his fields and I just recently learned how to drive a tractor to help him prepare the fields for planting.

Fourth of July Margaritas

Fourth of July Margaritas

Last week I talked about a craving that hit after a long workout on a very hot day. I wanted a cocktail. Ideally one that I could drink at the beach, but the river was all I had. I made it work though. I made a Plum Vodka Fizz with FITAID (a recovery drink) which seemed fairly appropriate given my post workout craving. I'm not saying you should drink vodka after you workout, but hey, why not live a little. Don't worry, I ate food too. I'm not one to skip a meal. Apparently my ice cold cocktail craving wasn't a one day thing either because I had another one today. Yesterday I helped my mom pick her garden and it was overflowing with berries. Have you ever sat out in the sun picking fruit for hours? It's fun. You might get a sugar rush though if you're like me and lack self control when something tastes so good. One for me, one for my basket. Oh well, at least it was fruit and not a candy shop. That would be dangerous. I have an uncontrollable sweet tooth.

Plum Vodka Fizz

Plum Vodka Fizz

We're coming into another heat wave at my house, 102F today and 108F by the end of the week! Luckily they gym I train at stays pretty cool because there's no way they'd turn the AC. The building is 53,000 square feet (and there is no AC, I'm just speaking hypothetically). The building used to be a cannery back in the day and my coach (the owner) put in a couple of those Big Ass Fans (that's the actual name) so it's bearable! The part that sucks is getting in my car to drive home afterwards. Luckily there is AC in it! And I always have an ice cold FitAID to chug when I'm done. As I was chugging my FitAID on the way home the other day and thinking about how tan I could get in this heat (if I could bare laying out in it) I started imagining myself at the beach with a cocktail in my hand. You know, what we all day dream about right?

Strawberry Lemonade

Strawberry Lemonade

When life hands you lemons, make limoncello. Oh that's a different recipe! And that one's not so paleo. But it's delicious and it's going to make for some great cocktails! We have a nice big lemon tree and we decided to make some limoncello last week. Limoncello only uses the peel of the lemon though so I needed to find another use for the lemons. Strawberry lemonade it was! I'll be making these all summer long. They're so refreshing. And I'll probably mix in a little alcohol for my next bbq. Strawberry lemonade cocktails, that sounds good!

Almond Mocha Protein Shake

Almond Mocha Protein Shake

I love chocolate shakes, and I love coffee. So I figured, why not put them together and make an awesome protein shake. I use PurePharma's PR3 chocolate flavored protein*. It's made with organic rice protein concentrate (I know, I know, rice isn't paleo, but trust me this protein is super clean and good for you, it's the best I've found!), evaporated coconut water and bioactive collagen. No protein powder is truly Paleo anyway, and I prefer to get my nutrients from real food, but it's nice to have a quick post workout shake to aid in recovery without having to stomach a whole meal. Plus, if you ever get a sweet tooth like I do, this will hit the spot, I promise!

Peach Berry Iced Tea with Probiotics

Peach Berry Iced Tea with Probiotics

Probiotics are important. I know that. But why are they important? And why have I not been so focused on including them in my diet? There are always things we can do to improve our diet, and I'm so glad I was able to spend some time with the guys from PurePharma at the CrossFit Games last month because they reminded me of their importance. It's always great to hang out with likeminded individuals who also happen to be very smart. They're passionate about diet and nutrition and extremely intelligent when it comes to developing high quality products that supplement our diets in the best way possible.

MANGO BERRY SMOOTHIE

MANGO BERRY SMOOTHIE

I'm finally getting back into the groove of things at the gym. After a week off my body is ready to get back to training. I've decided to follow the CrossFit Invictus Competition Program and I'm really excited about it. A new program cycle began yesterday so it's perfect timing. And I have a few friends at the gym who want to follow along as well which will make it fun. The combined focus on foundational strength and aerobic capacity should be great in preparing me to accomplish my goals this year. Improving my endurance is crucial in my attempt to compete as an individual next year. It's always been my weakness and I can't say I love conditioning. Give me gymnastics and let me lift some heavy weights and I'm happy. But not everything is going to be fun when you're trying to reach a bigger goal right? I mean I had to row 1500 meters 3 times yesterday. Talk about brutal! But I know I'm one step closer to my goal. And it will get easier right? RIGHT? Actually, the most brutal part about yesterdays workout was the weather. It was 115 degrees! So HOT! I got home and I couldn't even fathom cooking. So I decided to make a smoothie. I rarely have cravings for them. But this weather had me wanting something cold and fruity. So I whipped up this mango berry drink and it was delish! I hope you enjoy it on one of these hot summer days.

BLENDED ICED COFFEE

BLENDED ICED COFFEE

Well things are heating up in my neck of the woods and when it's hot I like a nice cold drink. I'm a lover of blended coffees, but they often have dairy in them so I've come up with my own. It's also so simple and delicious that I'm not sure why I hadn't been making them before! I hope everyone's doing well. I've been training for the NorCal CrossFit regional competition next weekend. I'm competing with my team, CrossFit 209 Sport and we've just been hammering our workouts. Like 3-4 hours a day! It's intense but it's awesome to be doing with some extremely fit and motivational athletes. And I can't believe it's 5 days away now! My families also coming out to watch me compete all weekend and I'm so excited. They've never seen me compete in CrossFit before so I can't wait for them to see what I do. Ill admit I'm nervous and feeling the pressure of competing on a team, but I'm also getting very anxious and excited. It should be an awesome but difficult three days. Ill report back next weekend with how it went! For now blend one of these up and enjoy.
